Winelands - South Africa
South African wines are becoming world renowned, what is less well known is that the setting in which the wine is produced is as worthy of admiration as the wines themselves. Your visit to the South African wine country will help you to explore this stunning region at the centre of South Africa's wine producing industry. The Winelands is for the most part set in valleys nestled between rugged mountains. The Winelands region has many fine wine estates offering wine tasting and cellar tours as well as gracious farm accommodation and hidden restaurants.
Stellenbosch lies at the heart of the wine country and is South Africa’s second oldest town and well worth a visit. Famous for its Cape Dutch architecture and oak line streets this historical town is an ideal point to start your exploration of the area. As an important centre, Stellenbosch has many galleries and museums housing important national and international art collections. Stellenbosch offers a number of hotels, luxury cottages and guesthouses in and around that provide the perfect base from which to embark on your wine tasting adventures.
Franschhoek, on the one hand, is a small rural village in the heart of the Cape Winelands. It is situated in beautiful green valley surrounded by mountains, 80km from Cape Town and city life. Franschhoek (literally French Corner) is the town originally settled by the Huguenots, and is as renowned for its many restaurants and fine cuisine as for its excellent wine estates. Franschhoek is home to many buildings with architectural styles which date back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Many Cape Dutch, Cape Cottage and Victorian style houses can be seen when taking a walk through this delightful village. Franschhoek is well known for its excellent restaurants, top accommodation establishments, splendid mountains and open-hearted hospitality.
Paarl, on the other hand, is home to a number of notable wine estates, restaurants and guest houses of great renown. Along the 6km Main Street is the attractive headquarters of the largest wine co-operative in the world, the KWV, responsible for marketing South African wine internationally. When in Paarl, it’s hard not to be affected by the slower and more relaxed country-side pace of life. Enjoy Paarl in your own time, go on one of the wine tasting tours and relax at one of the town’s comfortable accommodations.
